Big Daddy Kane Calls Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole True Lyricists

Big Daddy Kane gives flowers to the likes of J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Benny The Butcher and more.

Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole were hailed as true lyricists by one of the greatest ever Big Daddy Kane. Kane is on the promo run for his upcoming Netflix documentary “Paragraphs I Manifest” as he sat down with AllHipHop for a new interview. During the conversation, the rapper gives flowers to some of the current generation, while naming some of the greats of hip-hop.

“When you look at the era of the Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz and Kool Moe Dee and then you see how it evolved and became Rakim and KRS-One, and then you see how it evolved again in the era of Nas, Biggie and JAY-Z, from a lyrical standpoint, you want to see it keep evolving,” he said.

He continued, “By the time the ’90s came around, Hip-Hop had become so commercial, that it was more important about having commercial songs and something more simplistic. A lot of the artists that came after that, their mindset wasn’t really on being lyrical, it was on writing catchy songs. That’s really where their mindset was.”

“So when you see people like J. Cole, Benny The Butcher, Conway The Machine, Kendrick Lamar and Lady London, I have a special respect for that because they’re true to lyricism.”

Back in 2021, Kane sat down with Cole for his documentary, and he called the Dreamville rapper his favorite from current generation. “Amazing interview today with @realcoleworld. My favorite MC of this era. My son loves this Brother as well,” he said at the time.

In the clip with Cole, Kane says, “A lot of people out there right now are coming to people such as myself and many others, giving us our flowers and whatnot while we’re still here. But listen, I wanna give this young brother right here his flowers like on the real.” Cole reacts to the appreciation with a “Damn“.

For the documentary, Big Daddy Kane also sat down with Eminem, whom he called a rap scientist. “Honestly, I didn’t recognize it until I spoke to Proof. Rest in peace, Proof,” said Kane previously. “Eminem has a unique style, but I didn’t really see how it resembled mine. If anything, flow-wise, it resembled more Busta. That’s just my opinion. We did that interview [with Eminem] just recently. He was talking to me about my rhymes, then I was sitting there like, “Okay, okay, I get it now”. But I mean, Em is a beautiful rubber man. Because nothing goes over his head, man. He’s a student of the game who studies it like a scientist. Pouring little drops and stuff… He studies it thoroughly. It was a good conversation we had. He is real deep into hip hop.”
