At the Record of the Year Awards, Lizzo gave an emotional speech as she dedicated her award to the late legendary musician, Prince. She mentioned that she felt “unexpectedly” blessed to win the award and shared how Prince’s loss had a profound impact on her life. She explained that after his death, she had dedicated herself to spreading positivity and happiness through her music, even though her songs were not popular when she first started her career ” “I like to believe that not only can people do good, but we just are good. We are good inherently.”

She also gave a shout-out to Beyoncé, who has been a major source of inspiration for her. She reminisced about skipping school in the fifth grade to see Beyoncé perform, which made her realize her own musical aspirations.
