DaBaby Says His Homophobia Controversy Was A Blessing In Disguise

DaBaby looks back on his 2021 homophobia controversy.

DaBaby made an appearance on the recent episode of UNINTERRUPTED’s The Shop, where he sat down with Damson Idris, Hebru Brantley, Katelyn Ohashi, Paul Rivera, and Maverick Carter. During the conversation, the rapper was asked about his 2021 homophobia controversy, which he now called a “blessing in disguise.”

“Oh man, I got knocked the f**k out,” he said 34:24 mark. “That’s somethin’ that came out my own mouth and said, you know what I mean? Like as of late, not even as of late, like you know…Like, I would’ve maybe handled it the way he… I woulda apologized, ‘Hey, I didn’t mean to.”

“Like, I’m this type of person. Like, I’m gonna fight to the tooth and nail, you know what I mean? About like my character and my intentions, That’s somethin’ I’ll never let… Like I’m not gonna let you, you know what I mean, make me… I’m not a bad person.”

He continued, “Yeah, like my [character]…That’s somethin’ I can’t, like I’m unfaltering on that. Like, you know, like I say like, you almost gotta make it your business to not let that s**t get to you,” he added. ‘Cause once it gets to you, it’s almost like, you know…It’s a nonstop game of figurin’ this s**t out. That’s what we have to do anyway, is to market ourselves, you know what I mean, to make ourselves worth somethin’.”

The rapper got into the controversy after his comments during his concert at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly se*ually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up! Ladies, if your p—y smell like water, put your cellphone lighter up! Fellas, if you ain’t s**king d— in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up!”

“[Hot 97] allowed me to share my gift, share my blessing with y’all out here live on this stage amongst all the chaos and all the backlash,” said DaBaby at Hot 97’s Summer Jam, his first show since Rolling Loud. “So hats off to y’all for that… They accepted my sincerity and all my apologies when I said I never, ever meant to offend anybody or say anything to make anybody feel any type of way live on that stage a few weeks ago. And Hot 97 was also willing to stick they neck out on the line, willing to go against all odds with everything going on out here in the world, and still allow me to come out here on this stage and utilize the platform to help the world move forward.”
