Tyler the Creator Says Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP Taught Him How To Rap

Tyler the Creator praises Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP”.

This week, Eminem’s classic and arguably his best studio album “The Marshall Mathers LP” turned 21. The Grammy Award-winning album sold over 1.78 million copies in the US in its first week, which is still a record for any Hip-Hop album and the 4th highest sales in the first week in all genres. The 19 track album become certified Diamond in March 2011 for selling 10 million copies in the US. Tyler the Creator, who’s influenced by Eminem’s catalog, also praised the “The Marshall Mathers LP” on Genius’ Instagram.

This album man. very important in my putting words together. I learned how to rap because of this,” wrote Tyler on Genius’ 21st Anniversary post for the Eminem album.

The album sold twice as many copies in its first week in the United States than the previous hip hop record holder, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle from 1993. The Marshall Mathers LP sold over 800,000 copies in its second week, 600,000 copies in its third week, and 520,000 copies in its fourth week, totalling 3.65 million copies in four weeks.

The album spent a total of eight weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200, placing it fourth all-time among hip hop albums in terms of weeks spent at number one. “The Real Slim Shady,” the album’s debut single, became Eminem’s biggest hit to that date. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the number one single in the United Kingdom.

Both the rappers aren’t on good terms, ever since Tyler made fun of Eminem’s compilation album “SHADY XV” in 2014, for which he got dissed by the Detroit rapper on “Kamikaze“. But still, Tyler never misses a chance to praise Eminem’s old work, as last year, he named “MMLP” one of his favorites albums of all time.
