The “Super Freaky Girl” hitmaker accepted the award and read a speech which she had on her phone. During her speech, She thanked other musicians for helping her become a better artist, for working with her and for giving her career-changing opportunities. “All of the essential people that inspired me,” she said before naming the likes of Lil Wayne, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Eminem, Mariah Carey, Drake, Rihanna and more.

“I wish that Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were here. I wish that people understood what they meant and what they were going through. I wish people took mental health seriously, even for the people that you think have the perfect lives” she said, and then also remembered Nipsey Hussle, Juice WRLD and Pop Smoke.

She then honored significant figures in her life, “RIP Daddy, my cousin Richard and my business manager Angela who I never got to say rest in peace to publicly.”

Along with Vanguard Award, Nicki Minaj also won the Best Hip-Hop category for her recent Lil Baby collab “Do We Have A Problem?”. Not only that, but Minaj also hit the stage to perform a medley of hits. She performed “All Things Go,” “Roman’s Revenge,” “Monster,” “Beez in the Trap,” “Chun-Li,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Super Bass,” “Anaconda” and her latest history-making single “Super Freaky Girl”.

After Missy Elliott, who won the VMA Video Vanguard award in 2019, Minaj is the first recipient. Her hosting duties for the awards show with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow were in addition to winning one of the night’s greatest prizes. This week, Minaj also achieved a new professional milestone when “Super Freaky Girl” became her first solo No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
