Lil Nas X came to Twitter after the release of his debut studio album, Montero, to connect with his fans and clarify some of the record’s unanswered mysteries.

Montero was the most pre-added album on Apple Music two weeks before its release (August 27 to September 2, 2021), ranking one spot ahead of ABBA’s Voyage (2021). The album opened at number two on the Billboard 200 with 126,000 equivalent unit sales in its first week, 22,000 of which were pure album sales. The album also produced two Billboard Hot 100 hits: “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” which reached number one on April 10, 2021, and “Industry Baby,” which reached number one on October 23, 2021. “That’s What I Want” made the top ten as well, peaking at number ten on October 2, 2021.

X was asked which song he submitted to Nicki Minaj and urged her to put on the album, among other things. The rapper claimed in a recent interview with The Breakfast Club that he gave Nicki a tune, but she didn’t respond. He’s now revealed that the song in question was “Industry Baby,” which he co-wrote with Jack Harlow.

Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, and Miley Cyrus all made cameo appearances on the album. Montero is a pop rap album containing elements of several other genres. Music critics complimented its varied production and appealing composition, giving it high marks. In addition, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” garnered nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Music Video at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, while “Industry Baby” received a nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance. This was his second consecutive nomination in the category. During the ceremony, Lil Nas X also had a performance of “Dead Right Now.”
