Eminem Reveals Why He's Only Releasing Surprise Albums Now

Eminem talks about releasing only surprise albums now.

On New Year’s Eve, Eminem discussed his new songs on “Music To Be Murdered By” Side B along with Gray Rizzy on Shade 45 Radio. At the start of the interview, Eminem was asked why he’s only released surprise albums for the past couple of years.

Eminem is releasing a new song as a follow-up to his 2020 album Music to Be Murdered By. The critically acclaimed rapper debuted his new single “From The D 2 The LBC” with Snoop Dogg on Friday and concurrently revealed his upcoming release, Curtain Call 2. Eminem used the hashtag Curtain Call 2 in the description of an Instagram post where he shared the song and cover art made by the “Slim Shady Comics Group.”

Eminem has startled the music business and his fans for the second time in recent years by dropping an album out of nowhere: in fact, in the middle of the night. Music to Be Murdered By Side B is his follow-up to Music to Be Murdered By, which was released in January 2020. Skylar Grey, Young M.A, Royce da 5’9″, White Gold, Ed Sheeran, the late Juice Wrld, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Denaun, Anderson.Paak, Don Toliver, Kxng Crooked, and Joell Ortiz all make cameo appearances.

I don’t know this to be true,” says Eminem. “But I feel like when I talk about an album that’s coming out if I give people, notice and they started seeing the tracklist or they know it’s coming, I feel like my best shot at avoiding some of that is to just drop it. Instead of people thinking to themselves, “If you don’t have a song about this then I ain’t f**king with it. If he’s got a song with this person I ain’t f**king with it”. And it kinds of gives everybody too much time to think about it and their expectations of what they think it should be, and I’ll never meet that. That’s kind of the theory I based it off ever since, I think, “Revival”.

It’s dubbed “Side B” since it’s a companion piece to Em’s 11th studio album, “Music to Be Murdered By,” which was also released without notice in January. For those of you who are struggling to remember, “January” is an ancient term referring to the first month of the year, which in 2020 occurred 73 days before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, historians say that a few weeks before the outbreak, Eminem attended the 2020 Oscars to make up for missing them 17 years previously.

Following the divisive reception of his previous 2017 album Revival, Eminem released his tenth studio album Kamikaze with no marketing or pre-announcement, making it his second full-length studio album in eight months. Sway Calloway explained why he chose to release the album in this manner in a four-part video interview series. “When you go into an album, you can go into anything with the mindset of, ‘This is gonna suck.’ I feel like giving them no warning was the best thing to do. When the Revival tracklist came down the pipe, it was like overwhelmingly, ‘This sh*t is going to be trash.’ Nobody really wanted to be wrong about it. I’m not saying everybody, but a lot of people had already formed their opinion.”

In July, Eminem collaborated with Kid Cudi on the song The Adventures of Moon Man and Slim Shady, which was released as a single. He also worked with Jessie Reyez on her single Coffin earlier this year.
