Eminem’s “8 Mile” film turns 20.

On this day [Nov. 8] in 2002, Eminem featured rap film “8 Mile” released in theatres. The Curtis Hanson-directed movie was a critical and box office success as it opened at No. 1 in the US with $51.3 million grossed in its opening weekend and it achieved a grand total of $242.9 million worldwide. The film additionally featured the Late Brittany Murphy, Mekhi Phifer, Kim Basinger and more.

The album’s soundtrack was likewise a financial triumph, earning the Recording Industry Association of America’s quadruple platinum certification (RIAA). The film received multiple nominations and awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Eminem, Luis Resto, and Jeff Bass for “Lose Yourself” at the 75th Academy Awards. The 8 Mile [2002] film, which contains autobiographical elements from Eminem's real life, follows aspiring white rapper Jimmy Smith Jr. aka B-Rabbit (Eminem) and his attempt to launch a career in hip hop, a music genre dominated by African Americans. The title is derived from 8 Mile Road, the highway between the predominantly African American city of Detroit and the largely white suburban communities to the north where Eminem originally lived in.

Meanwhile to celebrate 20 years of 8 Mile, Eminem’s restaurant chain Mom Spaghetti has come to New York for a limited time period.

This month has been a historic month for Eminem. Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (November 5). During the ceremony in Los Angeles, Dr. Dre conferred the accolade upon the rapper.

At the occasion, Eminem played alongside Steven Tyler, Aerosmith, and Ed Sheeran. Eminem was considered for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time in 2022, however he had previously attended the event.
