Terrace Martin Drops New Album Drones Feat. Kendrick Lamar, YG, Cordae & More

Terrace Martin releases the new album “Drones”.

Following an announcement last week, Terrace Martin has released his brand new album “Drones“. The project is a follow-up to his last year’s offering “Dinner Party” and “Dinner Party: Dessert”. The project features Kendrick Lamar, who assists on the title track, along with Ty Dolla Sign, Snoop Dogg, and James Fauntleroy.

The additional guest appearances come from YG and Malaya on Evil Eyes, Cordae on “Work It Out”, James Fauntleroy on multiple tracks.

Speaking to Stereogum, Martin details the meaning behind the album title. “I’ll tell you when we started first, ’cause it really is important for the definition,” he said. “It started off — man, I’ve been working on this shit for so long. My last record came out in 2016, I think, Velvet Portraits. I’m slow now, working on records. But shortly after I finished To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick was looking for a studio to work in in LA, and he found one. Him and [Derek] Ali found a little private studio in Santa Monica and I was doing all kinds of music at the crib at that time, too. I was listening to a lot of Club Nouveau and this group called Loose Ends at the time, back to back to back, and I came across little ideas that I felt could probably be something.”

Terrace continued to engage philosophical discussions about the status of the world with each contributor on this project, a process that enabled the album completely reflect Black creativity. “There are touches of R&B, touches of jazz, touches of hip-hop, touches of classical, Cuban music, West African music, house music,” Martin explained in a press release statement. “You’re going to hear all elements of Black music within this record. It’s not one element I can leave out if I call myself a true Black artist.”
