The Weeknd performs at Billboard Music Awards 2021.
Tonight was a big night for The Weeknd, who was nominated in 16 categories at this year’s Billboard Music Awards 2021. In a record-breaking feat, he won 10 trophies, including Top Male Artist, Top Artist, and Top Hot 100 Artist. “You guys make me want to do this forever. I love you so much,” says The Weeknd. He also teased that some new music is on the way, “I just want to say, the After Hours are done, and the dawn is coming. I’d like to thank God that I don’t have to wear that red suit anymore.”
At the show, The Weeknd also performed his current radio hit, “Save Your Tears” for which he recently dropped a remix with Ariana Grande. The show also featured performances from Bad Bunny, Jonas Brothers, BTS, Doja Cat, SZA, and more.
Before anything else, director Alex Lill and writer Charlie Morse recall coming up with the notion for “car choreography,” according to Morse. Morse quickly storyboarded their thoughts (seen below) to show the rest of the team what they were thinking. “From those drawings came a lot of realizations about all the different shapes you can do with cars, and I was doing a lot of them from the top down just to showcase the arrangements, and that’s when we realized that a lot of these play well from an aerial shot, which you see in the final big pullout,” they said.
The BBMAs celebrate music’s greatest achievements, with finalists determined by performance on the Billboard charts. Finalists and winners are based on key fan interactions with music — album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement — tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including MRC Data. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of March 21, 2020, through April 3, 2021.
