LL Cool J Brings Out Eminem & Jennifer Lopez To Perform at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

LL Cool J gets inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The 36th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony took place tonight in Cleveland, which honoured the likes of Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Tina Turner, Todd Rundgren and more. The Hip-Hop legend LL Cool J was also inducted into the hall of fame, and he was helped getting inducted by Dr. Dre. LL Cool J finally received the honour after six nominations in his career.

LL Cool J was admitted by Dr. Dre, who praised his buddy as someone who has “made a difference.”“hit that unique space that crosses generations … loved by you, your mom and all your kids. How about that?” Dre also chided Def Jam Records for once giving LL Cool J a cheap watch as a parting gift when he left the label. “That parting gift you got, it was just a placeholder for tonight,” Dre said. “Something bigger was always in store to celebrate you, my man.”

Dr. Dre pays tribute to LL Cool J while bringing him onto the stage. “LL’s body of work contains some of the most diverse hip-hop has ever seen. He became rap’s first pop superstar while staying true to his roots representing Queens, New York. The second thing I think about this is remarkable longevity. Now I’ve been doing this for 35 years and I’ve seen artists come and go; they get one or two hits and then they’re gone; they disappear. But LL’s longevity is unparalleled in hip-hop,” he said.

“All of the people who voted for LL to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame year after year. … I wasn’t thinking about the people who voted against me. I was thinking about the people who voted for me,” said LL Cool J. “It was love — ‘Wow, there’s some people over there who won’t take no for an answer. This is a guy who deserves to be in there, and we gotta keep fighting to get him in there. Hall of Fame, know my name.”

LL Cool J mentioned everyone in his acceptance speech: Humility. I know I’m supposed to get up here and talk tough and talk shit, but nah. Humility. I’m not talking about that false, self-deprecating, I-bow-to-you-but-I think-I’m better than you shit. I’m talking about real humility, where you have the confidence to collaborate, the confidence to work with other people. The confidence to celebrate others. First I want thank, of course, God. My mother, who told me, you know, “Todd you can do anything you put your mind to.” You know, I’m a little kid. She tried to get me to work at the supermarket. I didn’t like it. Wasn’t working for me. “Oh the register will tell you how much money to give back, Todd, it’ll be fun.” “No, ma, no.” [Laughter] I want to thank my wife Simone, my children, Italia, Samaria, Nina Simone. Yes, that’s her real name, she’s a singer, Nina Simone. Najee, my son, and Italia, all of them. Lamar, my son-in-law, he’s a good kid. Also have some new, some new additions to the crew, so I’ma keep it real. My grandkids, no what I’m saying? I love them too. So much love, King James and Faith. He was named after the Bible, not the baller. [Laughter]. I think. I think. I think. [Laughter]”

In an interview with Rolling Stone following the announcement that he will be accepted into the distinguished company of other musicians, LL Cool J described the award as “humbling” and “inspiring.”

“It makes me want to get in the studio and give something back for this recognition. In a weird kind of way, it makes me want to pay it forward by creating something special for people and outdo myself in a way, creatively,” the rapper explained. “That’s what it does. It makes me want to give the world a new music project.”

The musician also revealed to the journal that when he initially started his music career, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was never in his sights. “I was thinking about getting a pair of Pumas, a gold chain, and writing my rhymes in my composition notebook,” he said. “And just going to the block party and just being the best rapper I could be, the best MC I could be, and just going through that process. I didn’t know about these things.”

LL Cool J also brings out Eminem and Jennifer Lopez for a performance at the ceremony. Eminem joined LL Cool J for a performance of “Rock the Bells,” while Jennifer Lopez joined him to perform “All I Have”.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will be aired on tv on November 20th. Check out some of the highlights below.
