Denaun Porter Says Eminem Will Keep Making Beats Until He Becomes Perfectionist

Denaun Porter talks with Marv Won about Eminem’s love for making beats.

Denaun Porter and Marv Won have joined forces for a new podcast called “You Said What“. In the first episode, they talk about Denaun’s new album, Busta Rhymes, Mike Tyson, and more.

Denaun, or Mr. Porter as he’s better known, makes his second appearance on Conspiracy Worldwide Radio to talk about his latest EP ‘Stuff In My Backpack,‘ his progress and growth as an artist, and his upcoming album ‘9,‘ which will include Eminem, Jay Electronica, and Royce Da 5’9, among others. We talk to the D12 member and Eminem’s hype guy on dealing with demons, working with Dr. Dre on the NWA film soundtrack, touring, Yoda philosophy, online criticism, and much more in this captivating and brutally honest interview.

Porter collaborated with Eminem and Royce da 5’9″ as a co-executive producer on Bad Meets Evil’s first EP Hell: The Sequel. He also appears in their music video “Fast Lane,” as well as Drake’s “Forever” starring Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem’s single “No Love” featuring Lil Wayne, and then in 2013 he appears in Eminem’s “Rap God” video among other members of Slaughterhouse. He appeared in the music video for Eminem’s track “Godzilla” in 2020.

Through a common buddy, he met Eminem. Em was on the lookout for a producer. Denaun wanted to improve his production skills. Denaun’s beats were jazzy and the cornerstone of what got Eminem signed since they were influenced by J. Dilla (like everyone else who heard his music back then). He also raps, of course. Kon Artis was a member of the D12 group. They released an EP, two albums (both platinum) titled Devil’s Night and D12 World, and five mixtapes.

I am at 85 percent of being finished with my album but we are here to have fun because I got tired of doing songs,” says Denaun. “I actually got more songs than I got ideas. There are so many songs.

Marv Won also asked him about why Eminem has never done a track with DJ Premier. “To this day, I’ve never heard Eminem on DJ Premier beat. That’s f**king wild to me. I’m not saying as a business-wise but as a fan,” says Marv Won.

I think Em will tell you this,” says Mr. Porter. “We will ask him when we get him here but I think he just started having so much fun making beats. He will keep going. And he’ll keep messing with it until he becomes perfectionist and you lose the fun. I think that’s what happened but I’m gonna ask him. But from what I see Em got to the point where he just loved making beats.

“I see what you mean. Even at his height, the time when we ran sh*t in a sense, I wish it had happened. I had a cool beat, I was like. “Urgh, if you just rapped over it!”. But you, what happened is… and we’ll ask him, we’ll get him on here and we’ll ask him, but from my perspective, and maybe he’ll feel different, I think he just started having so much fun making beats. You get lost in it. And Em, you know, he gets into some shit and he’ll keep going. And he’ll keep messing with it. But then he becomes a perfectionist and you lose the fun. It starts becoming work. I wonder if that’s what happened, I gotta ask him. But from what I saw, he’s got to the point where he just loved making beats. I was like, man, give me that patterns to rap over! Because, you know, we used to have ¼ but then it was him going into the thing and you know what happened, he’ll quantize the beat and it’ll work, and it’s like, “Oh, I f–k with that”. You know, what you do on a PC or a sound machine…

Denaun Porter’s legacy should be honoured. Denaun, a crucial figure in the Detroit hip-hop culture, which saw the likes of Jay Dilla and Slum Village hone their skills, found himself developing creative synergy with a young Eminem. Denaun’s musical career, which includes his time in D12, working with Eminem and Dr. Dre, and interacting with some of the hip-top hop’s lyricists, can be found here.

And now he can brag about writing four songs and co-producing one of the summer’s most anticipated albums, Bad Meets Evil’s Hell: The Sequel. Nonetheless, his name is frequently passed over in barbershop discussions and lunch table disagreements over who is doing the most powerful work behind the boards.
