Cordae Explains Why He Dropped YBN From His Name

Cordae explains why he dropped “YBN” from his name.

Last year, Raleigh rapper Cordae entered the new phase of his career when he dropped “YBN” from his name. He was part of the YBN collective, along with Nahmir and Almighty Jay, which was officially disbanded in August 2020. Cordae later addressed his departure and said that he still loves Nahmir and Jay, and they will continue to be brothers.

Now in a recent sit down with Genius, Cordae explains why he removed YBN from his name. “I remember when I dropped YBN,” he said. “It wasn’t a popular thing at the time. I was gettin’ killed online. And I got tough skin, like, this just what come with the game. I don’t be trippin’ off anything. I can’t be talkin’ to kids about ownership and all of this you know when we pushin’ this brand that we don’t even own.

Obviously, it goes without saying, it ain’t nothin’ against Nahmir and Jay. Before I came to the conclusion that I was gon’ drop the three letters, I called Nahmir and I asked for his blessing. That was what was most important to me, I don’t care what anybody else thinks. I got forever eternal gratefulness and appreciation of that dude.

Cordae’s most recent effort is Just Until, a four-song EP that features A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip and Young Thug. The EP is meant to tide fans over until the DMV rapper’s sophomore album drops.
