Big Sean Picks Royce Da 5'9 Over Eminem; J. Cole Over Kendrick Lamar

Big Sean describes Detroit rappers on “Drink Champs”.

Big Sean was the latest guest on popular N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN’s “Drink Champs” show on REVOLT where he talked about various topics in the interview which clocks over 3 hours. Big Sean responded to Kanye West’s statement about him last month and also unveiled some more unheard stories. During one part of the interview at 44:50, N.O.R.E. asked Big Sean to say some words about his fellow Detroit rappers.

“Eminem, God MC. Sada Baby, Wild as a Motherf**ker,” he said. “Proof, Legendary. Legendary. I feel like he inspired Em a lot. He was really the one who brought D12 together as well. He was the backbone of that. He was cold lyrically. Listen to them Proof verse, they’re cold. Trick Trick, the protector. Danny Brown, so animated and authentic. Royce da 5’9″, Rap God, just like Eminem.”

Later in the interview at 1:01:00, the hosts asked Sean Don to pick one artist from the name they give him, and if he couldn’t, then had to take a shot of a drink. “J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar, I love both of them ni**as, but I’ve been to cole’s house though, Kendrick been to my house before. J. Cole opened his doors to me, I’mma go with Cole,” he said. “Eminem or Royce da 5’9″, Royce is my literal big brother so I gotta go with Royce. Eminem is, like I said, god emcee and it was dream come true to work with him but Royce, I’ve been in real trenches with Royce.”

N.O.R.E. questioned Big Sean about whether he had fired a photographer for taking pictures of Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Kanye West in the recording studio when they were working on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. He said, “No, what the f**k?,” and then went on to describe what he actually wanted.

“I don’t wanna tell this story…I know it’s a funny story, but he’s a real person, man,” he said, noting that the friend was a right-hand man to him at the time. “I’m out there playing my role, but I got my mans with me. I’m in the studio with Ye and Hov…he ends up taking a picture of all of us in the studio, didn’t tell me and then tweeted it. … They thought it was me.”

In the months leading up to the release of his fifth studio album, Detroit 2, Big Sean said he stopped using Adderall recreational drug because he began to develop a dependence on it. “I grew a lot as a person, I went through real n***a s**t. … I went through real people sh*t,” he said. “I don’t be heavy into drugs or s**t…I was f**king with Adderall. And I was starting to feel like I couldn’t function without this sh*t. So I gave it up.”

Sean has been extremely upfront about his depression issues throughout his career, however he didn’t delve too deeply into the factors that contributed to his drug usage. In an interview with Micheal Eric Dyson earlier this year, he said that he had “contemplated suicide a number of times.”

In other comparisons, Sean chooses Lil Wayne over Drake. Ice Cube over Scarface. Pharrell over Kanye West as a producer. Biggie over Tupac.
