Adele Surpassed Drake To Earn Biggest Album Debut of 2021

Adele’s new album “30” debuts atop Billboard 200.

As expected, Adele’s brand new fourth studio album “30” has debuted at #1 on Billboard 200. The project has moved over 838k equivalent units in the first week to earn the biggest first-week debut of 2021. According to Hits Daily Double, 670,000 comes from pure album sales. It is the largest Billboard 200 debut since Taylor Swift’s “folklore” from 2020. Taylor Swift’s “Red (Taylor’s Version)” which debuted at #1 last week, is ranked number 2 this week with 169k equivalent units.

The Official Charts Company revealed on November 22, 2021, that 30 had 167,000 chart sales in the UK in the first half of its first week, which was more than the remainder of the top 40 combined. The album had the largest opening week of 2021 in the country after only five days of release. 30 surpassed ABBA’s Voyage, which had begun with 204,000 chart sales earlier that month, with 219,000 chart sales. It’s also the highest opening week for a female artist’s album since Adele’s 25.

Adele has surpassed Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy“, which is now the second-biggest debut album of 2021. The album was previously on top with 613,000 units in the first week of release. Taylor Swift’s “Red (Taylor’s Version)” is now number third on the list, with 605k equivalent units in the first week.

“30” is Adele’s third #1 album, after her previous efforts “25” in 2015 and “21” in 2011. “25” moved a record 3.38 million sales in the first week, marking the largest single-week sales for an album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991.
