Academy Bans Will Smith For 10 Years For Slapping Chris Rock At Oscars 2022

Will Smith gets banned for 10 years from Oscars for Slapping Chris Rock.

It’s been around two weeks since the controversial moment at this year’s Oscars event, where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for joking about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Academy previously revealed that they asked the “King Richard” actor to leave after the slap, but he denied it. Now they finally made a strict decision over the whole situation and banned Smith for 10 years.

“The Board of Governors has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” wrote Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson. “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”

After the decision from Academy, Will has issued a statement to Page Six that, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”

Will Smith, who won best actor award for the first time this year, recently issued a public apology to both Chris Rock and Will Smith. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” he wrote. “I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”

According to sources, Will will keep the Best Actor trophy from the Oscars he won after the slap, and he will be entitled to be nominated for and win more in the 10-year term, however it has been decided that he will not be there to accept them. Furthermore, the actor will not be presenting the Best Actress award at next year’s Oscars, as is customary for the best actor winner. Will earned his first Oscar for best actor (main part) for his performance in King Richard.
