Throwback to the chart battle between 50 Cent and Kanye West.
It’s been 15 years (September 11) since the Billboard Chart battle between the two hip-hop giants Kanye West and 50 Cent, the day which was often called as the “death of gangsta rap”.
The two rapper went head to head with the new albums “Curtis” and “Graduation”, as they were released on the same day. Fifty was coming off of the success of his previous album “The Massacre”, and he was so sure on his ability to outsell anybody on the chart, that he bet his entire musical career that he would top Ye’s album. “I don’t get trophies, I get the checks. He [Kanye] gets the trophies,” he said in a new never-seen before interview footage.
He continued, “They’d like to see Kanye West give me a problem because I’ve worked myself into a space where I’ve become the favorite. Everybody roots for the underdog when he goes against the favorite, but let’s raise the stakes. If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on Sept. 11, I’ll no longer write music.” “I won’t put out any more solo albums.” he added.
Graduation topped the Billboard 200 by selling over 957,000 copies in the first week of sales, while Curtis sold 691,000 copies in its first week.
After having lost his bet, 50 created two additional great albums: Before I Self Destruct (2009) and Animal Ambition (2014). Over the weekend, the two chatted online after 50 Cent responded to a post that Kanye said was a hoax concerning Kim Kardashian’s diarrhea problem and 50 Cent contacted him.
