Check out the “2016 XXL Freshman Cover” Below.

XXL back with their annual Freshman list. This year the XXL Freshman Cover features 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Lil Dicky, Anderson. Peak, Desiigner, G Herbo, Dave East, Denzel Curry, and Lil Uzi Vert for their 2016 edition. And by the Fans vote 10th position features Lil Yachty.

You obviously had no idea Lil Dicky and Dave East encountered a decade before they were chosen 2016 XXL Freshmen, or that Lil Uzi Vert was originally in a group called after his birthplace of Philadelphia. Kodak Black was also in a group, and one of his early tracks sounds a lot more like Kidz Bop than anything on his Dying to Live album.

The commemorative cover was dubbed a “major hip-hop right of passage” by Dicky, one of the 2016 recipients. According to Billboard, the Pennsylvania rapper also says, ” “So many greats have graced the freshman cover before. For me it was really validating because a lot of what I do is humorous, so it’s good to see it still be taken seriously by such an authoritative source.”

Lil Yachty and Lil Dicky have collected accolades for their hits as well. Dave, Dicky has a programme on FX. Dr. Dre’s student Anderson. Paak has eight Grammy victories. Dave East plays Method Man in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Dave East established himself as a rap classicist with well-received solo and collaborative work. G Herbo’s most recent album, 2021’s PTSD, won his biggest first-week sales total and a gold plaque after helping to pioneer the emergence of Chicago drill music ten years ago. Denzel, a Miami native, gained recognition after releasing four excellent solo albums after being selected as a 2016 Freshman.

Fetty Wap, Dej Loaf, Tink, Vince Staples, Raury, and OG Maco were among last year’s Freshman awardees. The XXL Freshman edition will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2017.

On Tuesday night (June 28), the hip-hop magazine celebrated its ninth annual edition with a sold-out performance in New York City’s PlayStation Theater, featuring the bulk of hand-picked musicians the outlet believes have the next big thing. The Freshmen playing under one roof seemed like a tutorial for anyone familiar with hip-hop’s new faces with spectators effectively getting ten shows for the price of just one.

Anderson.Paak, Lil Uzi Vert, and 21 Savage did not play at the debut performance due to current tour commitments. Kodak Black, who is presently detained in Broward County on a variety of crimes including robbery and false imprisonment, was unable to attend, despite numerous artists screamed “Free Kodak Black!” throughout their sets.
