Playboi Carti drops the “Whole Lotta Red” album feat Kanye West, Kid Cudi & more.

Playboi Carti returns to the music scene as he finally releases his new album called “Whole Lotta Red“. The project contains 24 tracks along with “Meh” for which he dropped a video earlier this year. The album features guest appearances from Kanye West, Kid Cudi, and Future.

Carti’s signature unearthly sound continues on the new 24-track album. Instead of being a traditional lyricist, he plays the role of a fun conductor. His bars bounce between synthy, fractured beats from producers such as Pi’erre Bourne, Art Dealer, and F1lthy, the end result demonstrating how at ease he is treading the line between riveting and repetitive. On tracks like “M3tamorphosis,” featuring Kid Cudi, Carti adopts a more aggressive tone, departing from his usual baby-like cadence.

Since the release of his debut studio album, Die Lit, in 2018, the Atlanta rapper has remained elusive. In 2018, he had two guest verses, on Drake’s “Pain 1993” and Lil Yachty’s “Flex Up,” and only a handful in 2019, including Solange’s “Almeda” and Tyler, the Creator’s “EARFQUAKE.

Since mid-2018, shortly after Die Lit, Carti has been working on (and building anticipation for) Whole Lotta Red. His meteoric rise began with his self-titled mixtape in 2017, which included hits like “Magnolia” and “wokeuplikethis*,” and continues with Whole Lotta Red standouts like “Go2DaMoon” featuring Kanye West and “ILoveUIHateU.”

The cover art for Carti’s follow-up to his first studio album Die Lit from 2018 pays homage to the Slash magazine, which was crucial for punk music in the late ’70s. In fact, if you look closely at the Whole Lotta Red cover, you’ll notice “Volume One Number One” written on the left side next to the parental advisory label. The inaugural edition of Slash included a Melanie Nissen-shot portrait of The Damned’s Dave Vanian.
