The Weeknd drops new EP ‘My Dear Melancholy’.

Earlier today out of nowhere The Weeknd made an announcement that he is releasing his new project tonight. The project called ‘My Dear Melancholy‘ is an EP which contains 6 new tracks. Gesaffelstein features on two tracks.

The Weeknd launched a 21-minute EP at midnight on Thursday, much to the surprise of us commoners, who first learned about it when he teased album art earlier in the day. “My Dear Melancholy” is the Canadian singer’s first album since 2016’s “Starboy,” which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Since then, he’s been on Kendrick Lamar’s “Black Panther” soundtrack as well as rapper Trouble’s “Edgewood.”

Selena Gomez, his most recent ex-girlfriend, is probably the source of most of his sadness. The couple split in October, a month after Gomez disclosed she underwent a kidney transplant to cure her Lupus. “I almost took off a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop ’til you made up your mind,” The Weeknd says in the album’s first track, “Call Out My Name.” (In November, Gomez and her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber were spotted together, which we believe led to the song’s heartfelt lyrics.)

According to Republic Records, My Dear Melancholy was streamed more than 26 million times on Apple Music on its first day of release, more than double the amount of streams gained on Spotify, however Spotify says that My Dear Melancholy was able to rake in 29 million streams in 24 hours. The EP was expected to sell between 165,000 and 180,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, and it ended up selling 169,000 album-equivalent units, with 68,000 of those being pure sales, to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States.
