Nelly Says His Era Of Music Was Toughest In Hip-Hop Because Of JAY-Z, Eminem, 50 Cent & More

Nelly looks back at hip-hop competition during his era of music.

Nelly made an appearance on The Shop, for the premiere episode of their Season 7. In one of the teaser clips shared by the platform, Nelly talks about his era of music in the early 2000s, and how hard it was to get recognized because of the tough competition in hip-hop at the time.

Nelly states how he never even got nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys because of other giants at the time. “It’s one of those situations to where you would just hope that the Grammys get it together,” he said about the current situation in music and Grammys. “First of all, I wasn’t even nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys. ‘Country Grammar’ with 5 million and I didn’t even get nominated as best new artist. Because my album came out in 2000, So I wasn’t even on the ballot in 2001. The great talented well-deserving Miss Alicia Keys won, and she should’ve won.”

“But You gotta understand, my era of music was the toughest era in hip-hop ever…. Ever. When I put out songs, I had to go against DMX, JAY-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Luda[cris]… all of us are fighting for one spot. So from 99 to like 2008… 10? It’s the hardest era ever.”
