The rapper, real name Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and started marking music in the 1980s. He gained success with the release of his 1995’s second studio album “Gangsta’s Paradise”. He is also famous for proving the opening theme song “Aw, Here It Goes!” for the popular 1996 Nickelodeon television series Kenan & Kel.
In his long career, Coolio released eight solo studio albums and one collaborative project with WC and the Maad Circle. His most recent project titled “From the Bottom 2 the Top” was released in 2009.
Gangsta Paradise lasted twelve weeks in the top two of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, with three weeks at No. 1 and nine weeks at No. 2. The RIAA certified the song triple platinum on February 23, 1996, representing 3 million copies sold. It had sold over 1.8 million digital downloads in the United States.
“Gangster’s Paradise” premiered two days after Coolio’s death on September 28, 2022, at number 5 on the UK Official Singles Sales Chart Top 100.
“Gangsta’s Paradise,” a 1995 single that lasted three weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, earned Coolio a Grammy. The song elevated him to popularity, and the following year he won the Grammy for best solo rap performance.
“Dangerous Minds,” a 1995 movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer, featured the song on the album. Among his other well-known songs were “Fantastic Voyage,” “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New),” and “C U When U Get There.”
“This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace @Coolio,” wrote Ice Cube.
