Dave Chappelle is honoured to meet Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5’s Scorpio.
The 36th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony took place in Cleveland this past weekend, and it featured Jay-Z and LL Cool J as the latest inductions. The star-studded night also featured stars like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez and more. Comedian Dave Chappelle was also there to support Jay-Z, but the one moment at the ceremony made Dave Chappelle emotional.
At the event, Dave Chappelle gets to Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 group’s member Scorpio, who shared the clip of their interaction on Social Media. When Scorpio introduced himself, Dave Chappelle responded, “Are you f**king kidding me? Eddie Murphy used to tell me stories about you being outside of the club wearing clothes like you was from the future. My man. Oh my god. I know exactly who you are. It’s an honor, bro. You heard what I said to Jay. Boy, does that not apply to you? Man. It is an honor to shake your hand, brother. You have no idea, man. Kids like me… I was out there, I was listening to you. No bullsh*t.”
“Oh I believe you ’cause you know Hip Hop like we know Hip Hop,” responds Scorpio.
Chappelle continued, “Boy you inspire the sh*t out of me in a way you never even… oh my god… I can’t believe I’m meeting you. Eddie Murphy was telling stories. Bro,” to which Scorpio replies, “I don’t want to take up your time. I just wanted to shake your hand ’cause I love you and I wanted to tell you that.”
“Bro, the honor is mine,” says Dave. “I’ve admired you since I was a little boy. No bullsh*t. I’m getting eyed just thinking about it. In Cleveland, Ohio of all places. My guy. Much love. Boy, you made a difference in my life. Any time you look at me, good or bad, you contributed to it [laughs].”
Overall, Chappelle had a really emotional evening during the induction ceremony. Prior to meeting Scorpio, he said some similarly touching remarks about Jay-Z, who had been honoured earlier that evening. “I could sit up here tonight, I could talk about his acumen as a businessman,” Chappelle said during his speech. “I could talk about his accomplishments in music. But I think what’s most important for everyone in this room to know is what it means to us, what he means to his culture.” In closing, he simply said to his friend. “I am honored to be the n***a that gets to say, ‘My n***a, welcome to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”
