Big Sean talks about Eminem & his new album “Detroit 2” & the song “Friday Night Cypher”.
Big Sean’s promotional tour for his new album “Detroit 2“, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200 this past week. He sat down with Rob Markman for an interview on Genius. On the show, Big Sean discusses the new album ‘Detroit 2‘ as well as the stand-out track ‘Friday Night Cypher‘ which featured Top Detroit Rappers, including Eminem.
Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, better known as Big Sean, has finally released his long-awaited fifth studio album, “Detroit 2“, today, September 4, 2020. The star-studded album comes as a follow-up to the American rapper’s 2012 mixtape “Detroit“. However, the song ‘Friday Night Cypher‘ has been one of the most talked-about songs from the rapper’s recently-released album, as it features Eminem, Royce da 5’9″, Kash Doll, Stevie Wonder, and many more Detroiters.
Big Sean revealed the reason behind the rap song in an interview and claimed that he wants to make the entire city of Detroit feel included. Sean also reminisced about the good old days, revealing that he used to host a radio programme called ‘Friday Night Cypher,’ and that the star-studded tune transports him back in time. Extending on the song’s concept, the 32-year-old stated that it is a scene from Detroit 2 in which the entire city gets together, even those who are believed to have conflict or misunderstandings.
Furthermore, in an interview with the Detroit Free Press regarding Detroit 2, the American rapper remarked that he wants listeners to experience the city’s indestructible spirit, indisputable soul, and origins. He went on to remark that while Detroit is frequently overlooked, he believes that in terms of music, there has never been a bigger city than Detroit throughout the decades. The rapper ended by expressing that he couldn’t let that go.
Rob Markman asked Sean, “If somebody had to get cut from the song, it’s no easy decision.”
“No, I got a lot of hate from people,” says Big Sean at the around 31-minute mark. “I’m not gonna lie. I got a lot of like, everybody on the song was very appreciative and I know Kash Doll. I’m going to keep it real with you. Some of the verses I had to cut just a little bit, just to make it flow right. And people, ‘Why’d you cut my verse?’ I didn’t cut it because it was wack. I had to cut it just because… You know, I even cut my verse too. Even if my verse is longer but I cut it down. I did it to make it feel right. Obviously, the only verse I didn’t cut was Em’s verse. ‘Cause, you know, you can’t just touch his vocals. Whatever he do, it is what it is. He on that level. He earned that. So, it worked out great though. I’m happy how it turned out and I’m happy Em decided to like do that with everybody.”
“How difficult was it or was it at all different to get Em on board with the idea? We had ‘Detroit Vs. Everybody,” which was a record of… I think that was a statement record.” asks Markman.
Big Sean continues, “Paul Rosenberg helped a lot with that, and Royce. Because when I sent it to Royce to get on, Royce was like ‘You send it to Marshall?’, And I was like, ‘Nah, I wasn’t trying to bother him.’ Of course, I want him on it, but I was thinking, damn, Em too big for this. To me, he’s on top of that mountain. So he was like, ‘No just holla at him.’ So I reached out to Paul, hollered at Em, and then he was with it. And I didn’t even give him that much time to do it neither. So he knocked it out in a couple of days.”
In terms of the remainder of Detroit 2, Big Sean gives fans 21 tracks for his latest album, more than enough to make up for his three-year hiatus from the game. Jhene Aiko (twice), Ty Dolla Sign, Wale, Anderson .Paak, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, Stevie Wonder, Dave Chapelle, Erykah Badu, and many more may be found on the album.
