Akon Explains Why He Had Never Worked With JAY-Z

Akon talks about why he never had the opportunity to collab with JAY-Z.

In his long career, Akon has worked with some of the top names in music, including the likes of Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie and more. However, there’s one big name that Akon never had the opportunity to collab: one of the greatest hip-hop artists, JAY-Z.

During his recent interview on the Bootleg Kev podcast, the “Freedom” hitmaker explains why he never worked with Hov. “Me and Jay never worked together,” he said. “Which is crazy. I’m like, ‘how I worked with every artist in the globe except Jay-Z.’ To this day I don’t know why.”

Bootleg Kev then asked the Senegalese-American singer if he ever get close to collaborating with JAY-Z. “It wasn’t even inquired,” responds Akon. “Because the thing is, I think it was the timing in each other’s careers. At the time when I was at peak musically, he was moving executively.”

In 2004, the same year that Akon dropped his first song, “Locked Up,” Jay-Z was appointed chairman of Def Jam. The creator of Konvict Music appeared to follow a similar path in 2008 when he stopped releasing full-length albums and concentrated on promoting his up-and-coming singers T-Pain and Lady Gaga.
