Jack Harlow learned the key to success in the Music Industry from one of his idols.
Jack Harlow was the latest guest of HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted” for a lengthy conversation with legendary basketballer LeBron James and businessman Maverick Carter. Among other topics on the show, Jack Harlow talked about the key to success in the music industry, which he learned from meeting with one of his biggest idols.
Previous guests have included former president Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Drake, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Lena Waithe, Diddy, Jimmy Kimmel, Patrick Mahomes, Lil Nas X, Will Smith, Megan Rapinoe, Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, and Rob Gronkowski.
During a recent episode of HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted, Jack Harlow highlighted the importance of self-awareness in retaining success in the music industry. The “What’s Poppin?” rapper said that he learned an important lesson after meeting one of his idols. While Harlow chose not to name the fellow artist, he did go into great detail about meeting the nameless idol.
The “What’s Poppin” hitmaker goes into detail without mentioning the name of his idol. “I was talking to one of my idols that I won’t name, but somebody that I grew up idolizing in the same genre, and I asked him you know, ‘What do you attribute your success to? How have you stayed refreshed and why do you think you’re on this run?’” says Jack Harlow. “He said, ‘You know one thing about most of these rappers when they’re hot, they can tell you everything about what’s going on, they’re tastemakers right? But the one thing most of these guys can’t do is hear themselves. They don’t have the self-awareness to say, ‘Mmm… that’s it or that isn’t it.’”
“So for me it hasn’t always been so much about every shot has to go in. It’s discerning when I missed. I know when I make a record, I know when I sound compelling and I know when I don’t. There’s ego involved in that but I can look at myself, I can hear myself, I’m in the studio, I know when something’s special, and I know when it isn’t.”
Harlow released the single “Tyler Herro,” produced by Boi-1da and Scott Storch, on October 22, 2020, along with a music video featuring the NBA player of the same name. Harlow’s words and delivery were complimented for their “easy, weightless charm.” Harlow will release his debut album, That’s What They All Say, on December 2, 2020. The album contains 15 tracks, including “Tyler Herro,” “What’s Poppin,” and a remix of the latter. The song “Way Out,” starring Big Sean, was released on December 9, 2020, and the album on December 11, 2020.
The anonymous idol could be J. Cole, as Harlow recently revealed that he met the Dreamville boss randomly in NYC, where they talked about rap for about 30 minutes on the sidewalk.
