Akon explains why Chris Brown never reached Michael Jackson’s level.
Akon was the recent guest on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast. where at one point in the interview, they discussed the career of Chris Brown. The “Lonely” singer states that Brown could’ve reached the level of Michael Jackson if he had the right people around him.
“In this day and age, the only person in my opinion that could have achieved just as great as a legacy as Mike to me would have been Chris Brown,” he said. “I just believe that Chris Brown wasn’t surrounded by the circle of creative people that Mike was surrounded by.” “‘Cause he got the talent, he just needed the direction,” he said. “Imagine if Chris had Mike’s team, just imagine that. It would be something different.”
He continued, “Chris, he got Bloods around him, he got little gangbangers around him. He don’t have the guidance. He smart, but he’s smart according to what this generation of smart attracts.”

Brown, on the other hand, has refuted his involvement with gangs on multiple times, notably during an appearance with Sway Calloway on MTV. “When you’re in LA and you’re around people, you meet everybody,” Brown said at the time. “You meet Crips, you meet Bloods, especially in this industry that I’m in. I’m not in the country world, I’m not in the all-the-way pop world, you’re in Hip-Hop. So Hip-Hop and R&B, all of that kind of meshes together, especially when you’re in these events or in these places where everybody can be there. I’m cordial at the end of the day. It’s never no disrespect, but it’s cordial.”
Has Chris Brown ever met Michael Jackson?
Michael Jackson was one of Chris Brown's biggest inspirations. When the R&B singer was 17, he also performed for the King of Pop in London for a "Thriller" tribute. "People loved the performance. I went backstage and met him," said Brown. "He said hi to my mom, he was respectful. It was just one of those great times in [my] life."
Breezy often gets compared to the “Thriller” hitmaker, and he shuts down the comparisons during a recent interview with Big Boy. Brown has already expressed his appreciation for Michael Jackson and acknowledged the King of Pop for inspiring his own talent. He has also refrained from claiming that he is a greater artist or musician than Michael Jackson, calling such assertions “cap.”
“I don’t consider myself better than Michael Jackson, and you already know when it comes to dancing and things of that nature… If I’m not better than Michael, how can Chris Brown be better than Michael?” he said. “I stay the hell up out of it… I kind of back off it. My personal take on it is I wouldn’t even be breathing or even being able to sing a song if that man didn’t exist. So I don’t know if they look at it as the Jordan/Kobe thing but I can’t even look at it — [MJ is] light years ahead.”
