XXL Reveals 2021 Freshman Class List Feat. Coi Leray, 42 Dugg & More

XXL Announces Freshman Class 2021.

It’s that time of the year again. XXL is back with their annual Freshman Class list as they announced the artists for 2021. For this year’s Freshman list. the XXL staff did record numbers of Zoom meetings from January to March to meet and greet artists, listening to new music and hear the rollout plans for around 100 Freshman candidates, which came down to 10 spots.

Many of the artists who made the cut for the official cover, as well as other alleged freshmen, such as The Kid Laroi, Sheff G, EST Gee, and $NOT, were listed on a supposed Freshman list that leaked months ago. When the list was revealed in March, emerging singers Asian Doll and Drakeo the Ruler publicly chastised XXL, and both musicians were sadly left off the final 2021 Freshman cover.

“Hip-hop is represented across many regions this year. 42 Dugg serves up his raps in Detroit, Flo Milli calls home to Mobile, Ala., Morray’s melodies are crafted in Fayetteville, N.C., Pooh Shiesty hails from Memphis, Lakeyah came up in Milwaukee, Coi Leray puts on for both North Jersey and Boston, Toosii holds it down for both Raleigh, N.C. and Syracuse, N.Y., Blxst is a proud South Central, L.A. native, Rubi Rose shows love to Lexington, Ky., Iann Dior’s roots are in both Arecibo, Puerto Rico and Corpus Christi, Texas, and DDG, who is this year’s fan-voted Freshman 10th spot winner, reps Pontiac, Mich,” wrote XXL.

We’ll be releasing freestyles, cyphers, interviews, and more throughout the next month. The music curator is multiplatinum-selling producer Nick Mira, who collaborates with members of the Internet Money team to create beats. Keep an eye out for their work in the much-anticipated cyphers as well as other video footage

Moneybagg Yo, Cordae, Ski Mask The Slump God, Lil Tecca, music video director Cole Bennett, Kash Doll, Jack Harlow, Conway The Machine, 10 of the most in-demand hip-hop jewellers in the business, singer Mahalia, Latin trap-pop singer Karol G, producer Jake One, engineer Todd Hurtt, and music executive Shawn “Tubby” Holiday are among the artists featured in the Freshman issue, which will be released on July 7.

Last year’s Freshman cover included musicians like Polo G, Mulatto, Rod Wave, Jack Harlow, and others, who would go on to become rap superstars. With the 2020 XXL Freshman Class being so strong, this year’s newcomers will have a lot of shoes to fill, so without further ado, here are the 2021 XXL Freshmen.

Pooh Shiesty of Memphis is the face of Gucci Mane’s The New 1017 label. The breakout Lil Durk duet “Back in Blood” appears on his 2021 mixtape Shiesty Season.

Lakeyah is a rising star in Milwaukee’s rap scene, which is exploding. Quality Control released her In Due Time mixtape in April. Republic Records has signed Coi Leray, the daughter of rapper Benzino. Her song “No More Parties” is regularly remixed, and it appears to acquire new life every day.

On asked how Leray feels about being included in the list she said “When I first got the call, I already knew I was going to be a Freshman. I put in the work, for real, for real. I went platinum in less than three months, my numbers are crazy. We got over 30 million views on YouTube alone, which is to the ‘No More Parties’ video. And besides what I have been dropping, I’ve been hopping on remixes like Pressa’s ‘Attachments,’ from Canada, which is going crazy; DDG’s ‘Impatient,’ which we just dropped a video, which is going crazy. There are so many more people that I have been working with and just everything that I’ve been doing. I knew it was going to happen. I was destined to greatness. It was only a matter of time. Timing is everything.”

Pooh Shiesty had plenty of momentum last autumn with “Back In Blood” soaring to the heights of a multiplatinum-selling smash. Unfortunately, he was imprisoned without bond days before to the release of the 2021 Freshman cover due to an aggravated assault case.

Although Rubi Rose’s debut album hasn’t yet been released, she has taken the necessary precautions to keep afloat. She first contributed a fiery line to Rob $tone’s 2021 hot rock song “I Love It” last summer. The native of Kentucky and Atlanta representative also performed well on the remix of “Nunnadet Sh*t” by Asian Doll in July and “Rock With It” from Saucy Santana’s mixtape in December.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be getting new freestyles, cyphers, and interviews from the 2021 Freshman artists.

“Everybody ain’t blessed enough to have this opportunity,” says Tossii in the Roundtable interview. “So I think like, if you ain’t take full advantage of this opportunity, I don’t know how often you’re gonna get too many more.”

“As far as peers go, I feel the love,” says Blxst. “I don’t really feel too much hate. And it’s no ego. I don’t know if its just this generation, but I feel like the ego is being taken away. It don’t matter what level you on. If you hard, you hard.”

“I never looked to be in competition with Blxst or be in competition with [Pooh] Shiesty or any of them,” added Toosii. “At the end of the day it’s enough for all of us. So, we here and we working.”
