“Hurricane” was released as the lead single in September 2021 and was followed by both “Believe What I Say” and “Off the Grid” in November. The track is also nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the upcoming 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
The song “Hurricane” was recorded during the sessions for Kanye West’s cancelled 2018 album Yandhi. The track’s basis was created during a three-hour jam session with DJ Khalil, Dan Seeff, Josh Mease, and Sam Barsh at Archwood Music Studio. West teased a version of the song with West performing the chorus in two teaser videos released on his Instagram and Twitter in September 2018. Several versions of the song were leaked in 2019, with Ant Clemons, Big Sean, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug, and 6ix9ine contributing verses.
The song was released as the album’s lead single to American rhythmic contemporary radio stations on September 14, 2021. It was initially planned to appear on West’s ninth studio album Yandhi (2018), however it was drastically modified and renamed Jesus Is King instead.
The record reaches platinum status just a day after Ye’s album “DONDA” earned the milestone. It became Kanye West’s 10th consecutive platinum project.
