Damon Dash On Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock When A Superhero Turns Into Villian

Damon Dash gives his views on Will Smith and Chris Rock’s Oscars Incident.

Will Smith is the trending topic for the past few days after the actor slapped comedian Chris Rock for joking about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head at the Oscars 2022 event. The “I Am Legend” actor also won his first Academy Award on the same night for Williams Sisters’ “King Richard”. Celebrities from all genres had been reacting to the viral moment, and now Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damond Dash gives his opinion.

“I will tell you this—10 years ago, five years ago, one year ago, if I ever heard that Will Smith got up and smacked somebody I would not believe it,” he told Page Six. “It’s almost like when a superhero turns into a villain or when a wrestler goes from being a good guy to the bad guy.”

He continues, “It is almost seen as the shift of Will Smith. It is like he’s sick of being a good guy I guess. Will is tired of being a punk and he exploded and Chris Rock got it.”

“It’s also internalizing a lot of trauma that he didn’t recognize and he overreacted to other things that bothered him. So more than likely I could say he could use a little therapy because he lost control of his emotions. The world is a different place. I know if that was me and Kanye I would’ve walked out in cuffs and Kanye would’ve walked out in a straight jacket.”

Dash said that he initially thought the incident was scripted. “I thought they was playing … all the police at the Oscars and security and he ran up on Chris like that. I did not think they were serious. They couldn’t been serious. If they were serious, man if it was real where’s the police? If I smack somebody at the Oscars on TV I wouldn’t even been able to sit back down.”

Just the other day, Will Smith issued a public apology to Chris Rock & the Academy. “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” he wrote. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness. I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”

The Academy announced earlier on Tuesday that it will undertake a formal assessment that will “take a few weeks.” Caroline Bright, Smith’s mother, expressed her pride in her son’s best actor triumph for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard. But, like the rest of the world, she was taken aback by his retaliation against Rock after the comic made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.
