Jay-Z gets inducted into the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
After Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Jennifer Lopez showed up to help LL Cool J gets inducted at the 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, another Hip-Hop legend received the iconic honor at the 2021 event, who’s none other than Jay-Z. Shawn Carter was inducted into the hall of fame with help from former US President Barack Obama and comedian Dave Chappelle.
Jay-Z’s introduction video featured the stars like Beyonce, Chris Rock, Diddy, Samuel L. Jackson, LeBron James, and more. The clip was followed by a pre-recorded message from Barack Obama.

“I’ve turned to Jay-Z’s words at different points in my life, whether I was brushing dirt off my shoulder on the campaign trail, or sampling his lyrics on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on the 50th anniversary of the Selma march to Montgomery,” says Barack Obama. “Today, Jay-Z is one of the most renowned artists in history and an embodiment of the American dream, a dream he has helped make real for other young people like him.”

“I would like to apologize… I’m just f**kin’ with you,” said Dave Chappelle, referencing his recent controversial Netflix special. “It is an incredible honor to induct this next man [Jay-Z] into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But I need everybody in rock’n’roll to know, that even though you are honoring him, he is ours. He is hip-hop. For ever and ever, and a day.”
In his acceptance speech, Hov honored his mother Dr. Gloria Carter, as well as Hip-Hop icons like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, KRS-One, and more. “Thank you, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, for this incredible honor,” says Jay-Z. “Growing up, we ain’t think we could be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We were told that hip-hop was a fad. And much like punk rock, it gave us this anti-culture, this subgenre. And there were heroes in it. And I would watch these guys and, you know, they had the big rope chains and they wore leather, and sometimes even the red, black, and green medallions. And whatever they wore, everybody would wear the next day. And I was like, ‘That’s what I wanna do. I wanna be like those guys.’ And so I set out on my journey, a lot of writing at my table, shoutout to Dr. Gloria Carter in the house.”
“Shout out to Dame, I know we don’t see eye to eye, but I can never erase your accomplishments. And I appreciate you and I thank you for that. Shout out to Biggs. He was one of the most honorable people I’ve ever met and we’ve created something that will probably never be duplicated. I appreciate you guys. Thank you for my journey. Thank you.”
