Anthony Mackie Reveals How Studying Shakespeare Helped Him on Eminem's 8 Mile

Anthony Mackie talks about “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” and more.

Actor Anthony Mackie is currently on the promo run for his upcoming Marvel show ‘The Falcon & The Winter Solider‘ which is set to releasing on March 19th on Disney+. He recently sat down with ‘First We Feast‘ for a new interview where he talks about the upcoming show, New Orleans food, and much more.

Mackie studied acting at Juilliard and went on to work in theatre shortly after. He studied William Shakespeare, probably the greatest writer of all time, a lot during his stay there. Mackie claims that his time at Julliard provided him with the tools he needed to play 8 Mile effectively.

He was also asked about how he prepared for playing a rap battle rapper in Eminem’s 2002 movie ‘8 Mile’. “I find myself very lucky to have studied Shakespeare,” says Anthony. “The idea of approaching a rapper from the perspective of an actor, you’re really just speaking in poems. I always said, one of the greatest rappers ever lived was Shakespeare. So It helped a lot as far as being able to understand the cadence, the verse, the meter and putting those words in rhyming couplets into form.

Prior to his mother’s death, Mackie had already leaned toward the performing arts, having enrolled in the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, a pre-professional school. Mackie, like many other young people dealing with trauma, says he began to act out. A core group of instructors assisted in getting him out of trouble. Ray Vrazel, who is still a teacher at the school, drove the student to a Houston audition for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he was admitted for his senior year.

He also reveals how studying in the Juilliard School’s Drama Divison in 2001 helped him become a good actor. “If I didn’t have my training, I wouldn’t be able to play Tupac, Martin Luther King, Papa Doc, Falcon,” he says. “Would only be able to play Tupac in every movie. I would only be able to play Martin Luther King in every movie, or the Falcon in every movie. I wouldn’t be able to do those different range[s] of characters. So that training is just something that gives you an extra leg to stand on. So once you have that background and training, nobody can take that from you. The training is just something that gives you an extra layer to stand on.

Despite the fact that he is most known for his work in the Marvel cinematic world, Mackie has been in the film industry for nearly two decades. He initially gained public notice in the critically acclaimed drama 8 Mile, in which he co-starred with Eminem. He plays Papa Doc, a competitor of Eminem’s character, wannabe rapper B-Rabbit, in the film.

Anthony Mackie reveals a never-before-told behind-the-scenes story from the set of his 2002 film ‘8 Mile,’ in which he collaborated with Detroit rapper Eminem, on the Rich Eisen Show, Anthony recalls a never-before-told storey about the ultimate battle between B-Rabbit (Eminem) and Papa Doc from the film “8 Mile,” Anthony says: “There was this one day, we were sitting on the set and Eminem comes over and he’s like ‘what’s up man, I was reading a script and there is no reason for me not to like you, you are cool dude, I like you’ and then I said ‘I like you too.’ And then he was like ‘Cool, So you don’t mind if I add some stuff in the script about you? I was like ‘About me or the character?’. He’s like ‘no, no just some character stuff’.
