Data reveals the most mentioned rappers in the Top 5 Lists.
Designer and Analyst Svilen Kostadinov decided to solve the Top 5 Rappers debate once and for all as he maps out every rapper’s Top 5 GOAT list to see who’s the most mentioned name. The list is compiled through only rapper’s opinions, no generational discrimination, and no self-nominations. According to the research, Eminem is the most mentioned rapper in other artists’ lists.

After digging for several days, the Analyst documented 53 responses, which is all he could find. He shows the most mentioned rappers through a network graph and a Top 20 List.
Some Insights into the research.
The Top 5 looked pretty much like we all knew it would, Eminem, Big, Pac, Jay, Nas are undoubtedly undisputed. However, there were a few surprises:
1. For all the love Andre 3000 gets, only 4 rappers think he’s Top 5 material- Drake, Common, T.I., and Cyhi The Prince.
2. Out of the 53 MCs, only Russ thinks Drake is Top 5.
3. Kendrick tied Snoop, Kanye, and Cam at 3 mentions each.
4. Kanye West got only 3 mentions- from Juice WRLD, Common and Russ.
5. Shockingly J. Cole, Drake, and DMX all got only one mention each.
6. BIG has a crazy impact given the fact he only released 2 albums.
7. Drake seems to think some guy called Young Tony is a Top 5 MC.
This examination contains a number of problematic regions and factors: Rapper feuds lead to significant bias in terms of inclusion and exclusion (for obvious reasons, Ja Rule will never list 50 Cent, and Drake will never leave out Weezy).
Duplicate lists: certain musicians have been asked several times and have responded with different rappers each time. Because there were fewer rappers to choose from in previous generations, one could argue that mentions by younger rappers are more valuable in 2020 than they were in the 1990s.
I couldn’t locate Top 5 rankings for at least a dozen additional rappers due to incomplete data (believe me I tried.) Obviously, new data will affect the rankings, but I doubt it will have a big impact.
The most intriguing observation I made regarding the notion of “Top 5 MCs” is that its importance appears to have waned over time. As fewer reporters ask the topic, it’s becoming more difficult to get replies from younger musicians. In that sense, I believe the cross-breeding of genres has weakened hip-competitive hop’s drive over time.
