Wyclef Jean reveals Busta Rhymes reaction on hearing Eminem for the first time.
Wyclef Jean recently sat down with hiphopisreal for a new interview where the Haitian artist revealed his first Eminem experience, and how Busta Rhymes went crazy after he played him the classic “My Name Is” record.
There are a slew of musicians that can recount their reactions to hearing Eminem for the first time. Dr. Dre’s goal of his Detroit protege being the world’s biggest rapper was released in the 1990s, and it is safe to say that his vision was realised. Many rappers at the time, however, couldn’t understand how to embrace this white rapper who talked of violence against his mother and a bad background.
“My Eminem experience, it was so…it was Eminem and Canibus,” said Wyclef. “So, here’s my Eminem experience… Busta Rhymes will tell you. When he came on my tour bus, he literally broke my tour bus. Because I had the… Jimmy Iovine sent me the cassette tape, it was white. And I was like yo listen to this and Busta heard “Hi, My Name Is” and he trashed my tour bus. You still owe me for my tour bus, man.”
“But you know Busta’s a giant. What are you gonna tell him? He’ll take you apart with one hand. He went crazy… Til today, I have nightmares of this thing. Busta trashed my beautiful tour bus after listening to this Eminem song.”
The incident happened in 2000, the same year Busta Rhymes was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the Grammys for “Gimme Some More”, and he lost to the same Eminem track. Busta Rhymes third studio album “Extinction Level Event” was also nominated for Best Rap Album, but it also lost to Eminem’s “The Slim Shady LP”.
Wyclef touched upon the conflict between Eminem and Canibus and expressed his desire for them to reconcile through a battle. He hopes that this will put an end to their animosity.
Wyclef continues, “My whole dream was to get Canibus with Eminem. That was my dream. I so wanted that to happen. And I know that Eminem had so much love for Canibus. Canibus and Eminem are two of my favourite rappers of all time. I wish beef between them had never happened. I’m a huge fan. Eminem is a complete genius and so is Canibus in his space.”
