Eminem talks about getting discovered by Dr. Dre on Mike Tyson’s podcast.
Earlier tonight, the new Eminem interview with Mike Tyson on “Hotboxin’ Podcast” premiered where he talked about a lot of things including how he got discovered by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.
The two recently collaborated on the video for “Godzilla,” which is featured on Eminem’s surprise album “Music to Be Murdered By.” Slim Shady is knocked unconscious by Tyson in the video before waking up in the hospital with Dr. Dre and a guilt-ridden Tyson attempting to resuscitate him. Em appears on the boxer’s Hotboxin podcast as a way of repaying the favor.
Eminem said, “Dean Geistlinger walks up to me, he’s like ‘Yo man you got one of those CDs?’ and I was like, ‘ya’ and I kinda just tossed it to him. And didn’t think nothing of it. I didn’t know that Dean worked with Jimmy Iovine. So he gave it to Jimmy, Jimmy gave it to Dre, and I get the call and I’m like oh sh*t.”
Em also talked about his surprising cameo at the 92nd Academy Awards, where he sang “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile. Slim was asked by co-host Eben Britton what it was like to sing the song over two decades after it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Em shook his head and sighed in sadness. It turns out that there was a little flaw that most viewers probably missed. “I’mma tell you why I’m making that face. Because when I went there, everything was cool, right?” he explained (31:07). “I go through the first verse, and they had the mic pack that you wear on your belt … and I’m rappin’, and all of sudden I see between my legs, the motherf**kin’ pack swinging.”
Em then moved on to talk about his new video for “Godzilla,” which featured cameos from Dr. Dre, Mr. Porter, and Tyson. The video, directed by Cole Bennett, depicts Tyson inadvertently sucker-punching Em in the face, resulting in the rapper’s hospitalization. Fortunately for Em, the punch was not genuine, and he survived to see another day. “If you’d hit me, I’d probably die. Like, right now,” Em told the former heavyweight champion during the sit-down. “I still feel like you can still get in there and f**k people up.”
Before getting his big break working with Dr. Dre, Eminem spoke to Tyson about his early troubles, including living in misery in Detroit “with nowhere to go.” Teary-eyed, he then said: “I just gotta say, bro … you are like a God to me. Bro … you done so much in your life, that’s just so crazy to be the heavyweight champion at 20 years old.”
“I’m just saying, man, it takes a lot to be the champ,” Eminem said. “I remember seeing the first couple fights when I was younger when you were first starting to really pop. ‘Yo have you seen this guy Mike Tyson, he’s knocking mother-f—— out in like 10 seconds!’
In an interview with Kevin Hart, Dr. Dre revealed that the only demo tape he heard and liked was from Eminem. “I’ve collaborated with some of the smartest motherf–kers and the most talented motherf–kers that ever stepped in the studio,” he said. “The only person that I ever heard on a demo tape that I really liked and really f–ked with in the studio was Eminem.”
He continued: “Everything else is the word of mouth. It’s exactly what you said, ‘oh you gotta hear this guy. Hey, you got to hear this guy named Snoop. Brought him in the studio and he started rapping. He didn’t even understand a song structure on anything like that. I think DOC taught him to do that s–t. It just happened like that.”
