Ice-T says 50 Cent was the last Gangster rapper.
Ice-T has long been regarded as a pioneer of gangster rap. The Los Angeles native recently sat down with Soren Baker, the author of The History of Gangster Rap, to discuss his reputation as a pioneer in the hip hop subgenre. The legendary Ice-T recently sat down with Unique Access Ent where he talked about the evolution of Hip-Hop rappers and no one is a Gangster now. “To me, the last gangster rapper was 50 Cent,” says Ice-T. “Because to me, he embodied that image. You know, that I don’t give a f**k. 50 Cent had you really believe you did not wanna f**k with him. I heard 50 Cent when he was beefing with Fat Joe and he was like, ‘Fat Joe, I am right down the street. It is real hard to find a ni**a when you know he got a gun, ain’t it. I was like, ‘Okay!’.”
Ice-T continues, “I think now, the new trap rappers, you know, they convince me they can get high, they convinced me maybe that they can sell a little drugs, but they do not scare me. I think if you a Gangsta rapper, you scare me a little bit. I do not think there are no new people that do it.”
“We scared the world so quickly, but then when Eminem did it they were like, ‘Okay,’ Now, people are kind of conditioned.”
Ice-T did give honourable mentions to Kendrick Lamar and YG, both of whom he feels have maintained “a great little hood edge.” He went on to say that he lumps The Game in with 50 Cent. “The Game was a part of G-Unit, but once that movement happened… I don’t know,” he said. “They do the drill rap out of Chicago and stuff like that — youngsters and stuff — but I don’t know. That’s just for me.”
Ice-T has long been regarded as a pioneer in the gangsta rap genre. 50 Cent has been in the music world this year, executive producing and performing on Pop Smoke’s posthumous first album Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, due to his legacy as a hip hop pioneer.
