This marks Riri’s first solo offering in six years, and it is co-written with Tems, producer Ludwig Göransson, and director Ryan Coogler. “After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them.” said Tems in a press release. “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”
The single is “a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman,” who starred in the first Black Panther film and passed away in 2020 at the age of 43.
“Burning in a hopeless dream / Hold me when you go to sleep / Keep me in the warmth of your love / When you depart, keep me safe / Safe and sound,” sings Rihanna.
The November 11 release of Black Panther 2 won’t be the only opportunity to sample Rihanna. Two Rihanna songs, according to several reviews, are played throughout the credits. She allegedly performs the song “Born Again,” which was created by the-Dream, in combination to “Lift Me Up.” Could that title signify a musical rebirth that leads to R9? Let your thoughts run wild.
