Baby Keem drops “Family Ties” with Kendrick Lamar.
After an announcement a few days ago, Baby Keem has dropped his new collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, which is titled “Family Ties“. The last time we heard something from Kendrick Lamar was in collaboration with Busta Rhymes’s “Look Over Your Shoulder” last year. The new track comes along with an official video, which also stars Normani. The song is produced by Roselilah, Cardo, Deats & Baby Keem.
Because Baby Keem is Kendrick Lamar’s younger cousin, the title of this song is quite fitting. In fact, the album’s cover image features a family portrait of both of them—a baby Baby Keem and an adolescent Kendrick.
“Smoking on your top five tonight, tonight
Yeah, I’m smokin’ on your, what’s her name, tonight, tonight
Smokin’ on you, shores, ain’t two-nine, yeah, two
I am the omega, pgLang, Rollie gang, acai,” Kendrick raps.
For a four-minute tune, this is as lively as it gets. There are at least three-beat shifts, with K-Dot dropping one of the toughest guest verses we’ve ever heard from him at the conclusion. The relatives go toe-to-toe at the end of the track, trading bars.
The track is released just after Kendrick Lamar’s recent announcement of his final album through TDE. It will be his first album since “DAMN” which was dropped way back in 2017.
Keem debuted the track on social media earlier this week, posting an old, grainy family photo with everyone’s faces hidden besides a young Lamar and an even younger Keem, evoking Lamar’s 2012 artwork ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city.’
The song was teased in a video teaser for pgLang in March 2020, announcing Keem’s partnership with the brand. Keem made an appearance in a series of short films produced by pgLang in conjunction with Calvin Klein in January.
In an open letter to fans dated August 20, Lamar revealed his final album for veteran label Top Dawg Entertainment.
“I spend most of my days with fleeting thoughts. Writing. Listening. And collecting old Beach cruisers. The morning rides keep me on a hill of silence. I go months without a phone,” Lamar began the message.
“Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family. While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next. As I produce my final TDE album, I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood. May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life’s calling. There’s beauty in completion. And always faith in the unknown. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I’ve prayed for you all. See you soon enough.”
