Vince Staples drops a new self-titled album.
After giving us “Are You With That?” a couple of days ago, Vince Staples has finally dropped his new album which is also titled “Vince Staples“. The project is a follow-up to his 2018’s “FM!“. Producer Kenny Beats who produced most of the songs on his last album has contributed to the entire thing this time. The Compton rapper announced the album last week on the occasion of his 28th Birthday on 2nd July.
The new album contains a pack of 10 new records with no guest appearances. Last month, Vince made his return to the music scene with the music video called “Law of Averages“.
Staples spoke out about his time working with Kenny Beats ahead of the album’s release. “Kenny’s somebody who still learns everyday, he still takes from experiences and other things he hears in music and tries to figure out how to make them into his own. He knows he’s very much collaborative in a sense,” Staples said to Zane Lowe, “A lot of people have an idea of what they want to do, but Kenny is somebody who kind of listens to what you kind of want to get across and he tries his best to kind of implement whatever you need, while still kind of remaining himself. So it’s always a fun time working with Kenny.”
Vince delivers verses with his usual narrative approach, and the majority of the record has a great, mellow bounce to it throughout. It’s refreshing to hear him rap over sparse hip-hop sounds, as opposed to his elaborately produced prior albums, Big Fish Theory and FM! Vince seems to have more sonic room to work with now, and he thrives in the spotlight.
