What did Will Smith tell Eminem in the late 90s? Watch the Full Interview.
Have you Ever Notice What Eminem raps about Will Smith in the second verse of his Hit Song ‘The Real Slim shady’. “Will Smith doesn’t have to cuss to sell records / Well, I do / So f*ck him. And f*ck you too.” While the lyrics were written in response to Smith’s 1998 Grammy address, in which the emcee-turned-actor decried swearing and Gangsta Rap, there may be more to it.
“It was so outrageous,” Jeff deduces, alluding to Em’s song about being alone with his daughter after kidnapping and murdering his wife. 16 years later, the head of A Touch Of Jazz Productions examines the response. “‘You’re gonna be the biggest flop, because I guess people are just gonna think you’re so crazy. Or you’re just a super genius’—and the super genius part really paid off.”
DJ Jazzy Jeff Revealed that Will gave Eminem Some Feedback in the Late 90s. In the new Interview with MONTREALITY Jazzy says “I was a big fan of Eminem, especially of his super early stuff. I just kinda reached out to him and we did some stuff together… Will Smith walked into the room, and I think I played ‘Just The Two Of Us. Will listened to it, and Will looked at Eminem and said, ‘You are either gonna be the biggest flop in Hip Hop, or you are gonna be the biggest thing that we have ever seen in Hip Hop. And Eminem never forgot that.”.
That kinda stuff, he just brushes off. The funny thing was, I ended up deejaying at an Em show in Detroit. And when I went in there, he kinda came to me and was like, ‘Yo man, when I said that stuff about Will, he wasn’t mad?’ I said, ‘Nah, he doesn’t care about that stuff.’
Interestingly, three years later, Montreality approached Jeff about Will’s words in his successful tune. When asked about the Fresh Prince’s “f**k you,” Jeff says, “That kinda stuff, he just brushes off. The funny thing was, I ended up deejaying at an Em show in Detroit. And when I went in there, he kinda came to me and was like, ‘Yo man, when I said that stuff about Will, he wasn’t mad? ’ I said, ‘Nah, he doesn’t care about that stuff.’ [Eminem added], ‘That was just me stickin’ up for [Dr.] Dre and that point in time.” Dr. Dre, a pillar of Gangsta Rap since the mid-1980s with N.W.A., was present when Smith made the famed Grammy speech.
In the Session, DJ Jazzy also talks about Introducing Detroit Rapper to Will Smith in 1998, and what was Will Smith’s reaction after getting dissed by Shady.
