It’s nostalgic, like its predecessor, Mastermind, only this time he uses a turn-of-the-century Southern trap classicism filter instead of mid-’90s Bad Boy devotion. Hood Billionaire lands in a dull grey area between feel-good retro rap (the Memphis homage “Elvis Presley Blvd” and the pleasant but forgettable jazz jangle of “Keep Doin’ That [Rich Bi**h]”) and Rozay greatest-hits karaoke that tries and fails to recapture the impact of his bulletproof Teflon Don bombast.
The MMG boss returns to the 16-track disc with the seasoned kind of street raps over thundering beats that has helped him reach rap’s upper echelon in recent years. Krizzle contributes a beat in addition to his vocals, and Timbaland, Metro Boomin, Lex Luger, and Beat Billionaire are all on board to provide the musical tone.
With first-week sales of 74,444 copies in the US, the album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. It also had the lowest first-week sales of Rick Ross’ career, with the sale of 69,033 fewer copies than the Shady Records compilation Shady XV, which was released on the same day and debuted at number three.
