Lil Nas X drops a new song “Sun Goes Down”.
After giving us “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” along with a controversial music video a couple of months ago, Lil Nas X continues releasing new material as he drops another new song called “Sun Goes Down“. The Geenah krisht produced track comes along with a music video which is directed by Psycho Films and Lil Nas X himself.
Lil Nas X appears in a white outfit and enters a meditative mood in the new video. He travels back in time to when he worked at Taco Bell, spends time alone in his room, and attends a school dance, where he feels lonely and breaks down. To his past self, his current self offers comfort and support.
He discussed his video’s aesthetic concept and technique. “My visual aesthetic is always changing. But a reoccurring theme in my work would always be Surrealism or Futurism. I really love to mix reality with imagination—I guess that’s my ‘thing,’” he said. “But for [the music video for] ‘Sun Goes Down,’ I kept that kind of feeling to a minimum because I wanted it to feel very real. But you still have me in a meditative state, where I go to this purple world where it’s like my future and past all existing in one place. I fly through that and go to my past me, and I’m trying to uplift him.”
In his latest interview with PEOPLE, he revealed the inspiration behind the new single. “I definitely tell about some of my upbringing and it’s also just a really great song,” said Lil Nas. “And the video goes back to my past, to 2017 Lil Nas X in his prime. Like he was at prom, working at Taco Bell, and what he did in his room, praying his sexuality away. Like all these things that I experienced that I wanted to share with my fans.”
