DJ Khaled drops the video for “POPSTAR”.
Back in July, DJ Khaled teamed up with Drake for two new songs, and today he drops a surprise video for one of them. He joined forces with Drake for “POPSTAR” video which also stars Justin Bieber.
The funny new clip, directed by Director X, begins with Khaled continually pestering Drake to appear in his song video. “This guy is insane,” a furious Drizzy adds. “Every 5 seconds, (he) asks me for something on my phone.” After almost two minutes of DJ Khaled bugging Drake over FaceTime with requests to film for “POPSTAR,” Drake becomes irritated and “calls in a favour” to Bieber. Cut to Bieber waking up during a chaotic house party, the legendary lyrics of DJ Khaled “Another One” and “We Da Best” scrawled on the wall behind him in Roy Lichtenstein style.
In terms of music videos, this means Bieber is free to take Drake’s place at the centre of the “Popstar” video, which was released on Friday and directed by Director X (Julien Christian Lutz) (September 4). Bieber plays the role of the main character, carrying a bottle of champagne around a mansion that is both in party and after-party mode while lip-syncing Drake’s raps.
By the way, the video’s setup is that DJ Khaled keeps bugging Drake to record a video for “Popstar,” until Drake ultimately asks for a “favour” from his fellow Canuck. What’s interesting about this clip is how Bieber as Drake doesn’t have the same Freaky Friday vibe that a pop star/rapper life swap would have had even 10 years ago, in a music environment where Drake, a claimed rapper, and Bieber, a supposed R&B/pop singer, are actually just both pop stars. It just seems like a pop video, but with a little more extravagance in the form of money and champagne spray.
