Drake drops a new freestyle over Eminem’s ‘Superman’. Mentions Jay-Z.
Drake has released two new singles. After closing out 2019 with his UK drill homage ‘War,’ the rapper enters 2020 with a pair of new singles. Earlier tonight, Drake returns to the music scene with a new track called ‘When To Say When‘ along with a freestyle called ‘Chicago‘.
Recently Drake dropped a surprise album Honestly Nevermind which is getting a lot of flake. Drake’s new album can be heard tapping to dance and house music on the album, along with tonnes of R&B crooning and hardly any rapping or guest appearances. Along with fellow musician J. Cole and triple j’s own Hau Latukefu, some fans have complimented the album’s sound u-turn, but it has also drawn criticism and some genuinely vile comments. Drake doesn’t seem to care what people think about his music, though. The “Your pu**y is calling my name” hook from “Calling My Name” is then sung after he says, “My goodness.”

“When to Say When” is structured as a heart-to-heart conversation, and he always sounds at ease in this setting. While he isn’t quite JAY-Z, his precise flow outlines the rap industry and reinforces his power by relying on his riches as the decisive element in any argument (a classic JAY move). In reply, “Chicago Freestyle” delves into the everyday concerns and flexes that come with his lifestyle, and Drake, who just ditched his cape, is an underappreciated opponent who doesn’t play the heel nearly as effectively as ’02 Em did.
In a December interview with Rap Radar, the 33-year-old “Girls Need Love” hitmaker stated that he wanted to prove to the world that he could still rap. However, the manner in which he returned irritated Eminem’s followers.”Chicago Freestyle” is a song about someone paying homage to art. Drake, on the other hand, used a phrase from Eminem’s song and reversed the verse to match his new song.

The rapper’s Toronto estate, dubbed The Embassy, is revealed in the second half of the video, Chicago Freestyle. Both songs pay homage to fellow rappers, Eminem and Jay-Z. When to Say When’ incorporates a sample from Jay-Song Z’s Cry, and Drake pays a visit to Marcy Projects, the rapper’s old haunt. In Chicago Freestyle, a stanza from Eminem’s single Superman from his 2002 LP ‘The Eminem Show’ is included, which speaks of a similar subject matter to the fellow rapper.
In his song “Chicago Freestyle,” Drake incorporates the chorus from Eminem’s hit single “Superman” into his own track. This use of the well-known chorus adds an extra layer of depth and nostalgia to the song, likely resonating with listeners who are familiar with Eminem’s original hit. It also serves as a nod to Eminem’s influence and stature in the rap industry. The incorporation of “Superman” into “Chicago Freestyle” demonstrates Drake’s appreciation for the work of his fellow artist and the enduring popularity of Eminem’s music.
The tracks are accompanied by a video directed by Theo Skudra. Drake visits many locations in New York in the film, including the Brooklyn Bridge and JAY-Z’s old haunt of Marcy Projects. He also visits his jeweller and previews several ice items before heading to the studio with 40.
A gloomy Drake returns home to Toronto in the second edit of the movie, where he offers a tour of his huge estate nicknamed “The Embassy” and rides across the city in his bespoke OVO Rolls-Royce.
Drizzy’s latest track “When To Say When” was released at the same time as “Chicago Freestyle.” Drake dedicates his lyrics to the lessons he learned on his rise to fame, as well as reflections on the different mistakes he made in previous relationships. Drake pays homage to Slim Shady in the freestyle’s hook by recalling Eminem’s song “Superman,” which was released on The Eminem Show in 2002 with significantly different lyrics which features guest vocals by vocalist Dina Rae, an Eminem collaborator. It reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in the issue dated March 15, 2003, and the Recording Industry Association of America awarded it a Platinum certification.
Did Drake copy Eminem Chicago Freestyle? Well, judge yourself!
He changed the chorus a bit which goes as:
“But I do know one thing though
Women, they come they go
Saturday, through Sunday, Monday
Monday through Sunday, yo
Maybe I’ll love you one day
Maybe we’ll someday grow
Till then I sit my drunk a-s on that runway, on this one way”
Theo Skudra directed the “When to Say When” half of the video, which shows Drake giving a visual tour of Brooklyn, while “Chicago Freestyle” takes fans inside the rapper’s Toronto mansion dubbed “the Embassy.”
Both songs pay homage to other rappers: The Brooklyn-set “When to Say When” samples Jay-Z’s song “Cry” — Drake even visits that rapper’s stomping grounds Marcy Projects in the video — and “Chicago Freestyle” finds Drake lifting an entire verse from Eminem’s The Eminem Show track “Superman,” which tackled similar subject matter.

Drake’s first solo tracks of 2020 are these two: The rapper previously collaborated with Future on the songs “Life Is Good” and “Desires.” Drake said he’d release an album in 2020 in a December interview, but it’s unclear whether “When to Say When” and “Chicago Freestyle” are album tracks or one-off singles.
When Drake’s fans began to laud him for his unexpected tunes, Eminem’s fans did the reverse and began to attack him. Because of the obvious changes, Drake made to the “Superman” song, Eminem’s fans raged on Twitter, accusing the Canadian rapper of “turning a treasure into trash.”
Pitchfork’s Sheldon Pearce believed Drake “doesn’t play the heel nearly as effectively as ’02 Em used to” in a mixed assessment of both “Chicago Freestyle” and “When To Say When.” The song was described as “cheesy” by NME’s Luke Morgan Britton.
