Prince returns this week with not one, but two new albums. ART OFFICIAL AGE marks the Purple One’s 34th solo effort, while PLECTRUMELECTRUM serves as the debut LP from his new girl group band, 3rdEyeGirl.
Though Prince wrote the songs for both albums, the sounds are distinct. Art Official Age, a classic, R&B-driven, Prince solo record, was produced, arranged, and performed by the artist and Joshua Welton. Art Official Age have 13 Tracks. Several of the songs were previewed online, the pulsating and funky “Breakfast Can Wait,” slow grinds “Breakdown,” “Clouds,” and “This Could Be Us,” plus the percolating, booming hip-hop offering “Funknroll.”
PlectrumElectrum fuses Prince’s and 3rdEyeGirl’s funk and rock sensibilities. Some of the songs were featured on Prince’s “Hit and Run” tour and have surfaced on the Internet.PlectrumElectrum have 12 collaborative tracks .3rdEyeGirl members, guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Nielsen, and drummer Hannah Ford Welton play hard, aggressive rock on “FixUrLifeUp,” “PRETZELBODYLOGIC,” and the ballad “White Caps.”
In an interview with Mojo, Prince discussed the recording sessions and inspiration for the new tracks. “We recorded it in Bryan Ferry’s studio in London,” he said, “after a night of partying for which the Cocteau Twins was the soundtrack. You can’t understand the words of Cocteau Twins songs but their harmonies put you in a dreamlike state.”
