If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was released with no promotion, yet it received a lot of attention, debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 with 535,000 album-equivalent sales in its first week. The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200, with 495,000 copies sold in three days and 40,000 for online stream credits, marking Drake’s fourth appearance at the top of the chart. He also topped the Canadian Albums Chart, selling 37,000 copies at the end of the tracking week. With over 17.3 million streams in the first three days, the album shattered Spotify’s first-week streaming record. Drake previously held the record with his 2013 album Nothing Was the Same, which had 15.146 million streams in its first week. If You’re Reading This was well welcomed by critics, who commended Drake’s distinct lyrical approach as well as the album’s production skills.
The album represented a sound shift from Drake’s prior albums, with sombre backgrounds suited for the ambience of nighttime and guest performances from Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, and PartyNextDoor. It’s Drake’s most free-wheeling endeavour to date in many respects. It is, without a doubt, the star’s most memorable, if not finest, release of all time.
