Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls” went diamond.
After over three decades into his career, Snoop Dogg achieves his first-ever RIAA Diamond. The rapper received the accolade for his collab with Katy Perry on the song titled “California Gurls”, which has now moved over 10 million units in the US.
The song was originally released back in 2010 as the lead single for Perry’s “Teenage Dream” album. This is the fourth Diamond single of Katy Perry’s career, which broke the tie with Lady Gaga. The song debuted at #2 on Billboard Hot 100 and then peaked at number one for six consecutive weeks. It was Perry’s second number-one single and Snoop Dogg’s third in the US.
In a old interview with Rolling Stone, Perry stated that the song was a response to JAY-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” for the West Coast. “It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everybody has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about L.A.? What about California? And it’s been a minute since we’ve had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective,” Perry said.

In a conversation with Logan Paul on his podcast, Snoop previously revealed that he walked in on na*ed Katy Perry for music video shoot. “Look how I got on that song. She reach out to me called my peoples, right? And she was like I want you on this song with me because she was tired of hearing the Jay-Z Alicia Keys song New York New York,” he said. “She was like I hear it everywhere we gotta make something for California. Not like hating, but we gotta represent where we from because this song is f**king amazing. This sh*t is amazing everybody saying New York, like we need one. I’m like alright what’s happen where do you want me to come ? Meet at the studio. I come in the studio and she got a motherf**king d**k shrine. I can’t make this sh*t up. A black d**k shine when I walked in the studio. I’m like what the f**k going on,” said Snoop.
“I don’t know what it was it a vibe and I wasn’t trying to get her and she wasn’t trying to get at me. Just the motherf**ker was there. I’m like I guess she like black d**ks in the studio I don’t know. I put the music on and do my thing and knock it out. Love the song. So, now she like the video cool no problem.
