Eminem dropped “Kamikaze” Album 3 years ago today.
KAMIKAZƎ turns 3. Three years ago today, Eminem dropped his tenth studio album “Kamikaze.” The project was a surprise release with no promo whatsoever, and he has been dropping only surprise albums since then. The album was the follow-up to his 2017 album “Revival” which received polarizing reception and was considered to be the worst project ever. Commercially, “Kamikaze” topped the Billboard 200 with moving over 434,000 equivalent units in the first week and became Eminem’s 9th consecutive album to debut at top of the chart.
With no pre-release promotion, no radio backing, and no critics queued up to hype up the release, “Kamikaze” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 73 weeks. “Kamikaze” eventually became the best-selling hip hop album of 2018. By the end of the year, it had been certified Platinum in the United States.
The 13 track project featured guest appearances from Joyner Lucas, Royce Da 5’9″, and Jessie Reyez. On the project, Shady took shots at various artists including Lil Pump, Lil Xan, Joe Budden, Charlamagane Tha God, Tyler The Creator, DJ Akademiks, and more. In his collaboration “Not Alike” with Royce Da 5’9″, Eminem reignite his feud with Machine Gun Kelly, for which the Cleveland rapper responded with “Rap Devil.”
Three singles were released to promote the album: “Fall,” “Venom,” from the 2018 film of the same name, and “Lucky You,” as well as a music video for “Good Guy” and a supporting tour.
Eminem who rarely does interviews sat down with Sway Calloway for a lengthy conversation about the album and more.
