Eminem’s 2017 BET Cypher Freestyle turns 5.
It’s been five years since Eminem returned to BET Hip-Hop Awards 2017 Cypher for a controversial freestyle where he dissed the US President Donald Trump. In the 4 and half minute freestyle, he ripped apart Donald Trump and shouts out Colin Kapernick. It was also the day when Eminem told his fans to pick a side if they’re on the fence.
Trump NFL protest, his “endorsement of Bannon,” “his backing for Klansmen,” and Trump’s “extravagant vacations back-and-forth with his fam to his golf resorts and homes” were all slammed by Eminem.
Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem , this year to raise attention to the injustice of Black people and people of colour. Critics reacted angrily to his conduct, which Trump quickly capitalised on. Colin has yet to snap another pass since then, but his actions have had an impact. “Now if you’re a black athlete you’re a spoiled little brat for / Tryna use your platform or your stature /To try to give those a voice who don’t have one,” He says. “You’re spittin’ in the face of vets who fought for us, you bastards! Unless you’re a POW who’s tortured and battered / ‘Cause to him you’re zeros /’Cause he don’t like his war heroes captured / That’s not disrespectin’ the military /F**k that, this is for Colin, ball up a fist!”
The freestyle was acknowledged by a flood of celebrities, including J. Cole, Snoop Dogg, LeBron James, Ellen DeGeneres, Diddy, and more.
