Eminem’s “The Slim Shady LP” turns 22.
On this day in 1999, Eminem released his second and the first major-label album “The Slim Shady LP” which featured major production from Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers, and Eminem himself. The project debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and received commercial and critical success.
The first single ‘My Name Is‘ became the Detroit Rapper’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Slim Shady LP sold 283,000 copies in its first week of release, placing it second on the Billboard 200 list behind TLC’s FanMail. The song spent 100 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. It also debuted at number one on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Albums list, where it remained for 92 weeks. The Slim Shady LP was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on April 5, 1999, after selling over one million copies.
While the success of The Slim Shady LP transformed Eminem from an underground rapper to a high-profile superstar, his lyrical content, which some saw as sexist and a harmful influence on American youth, made him a very controversial figure.
The album which is certified quadruple platinum won the Best Rap Album trophy at the 2000 Grammy Awards. What is your favorite track off the album?
